CLEVELAND COUNTY — Welcome to 'SI's Week in Review' where we sum up the week's headlines that were covered in The Shelby Independent’s website and on social media.

Steve and Cindy Borders, along with volunteers from Elizabeth Baptist Church hosted their annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Hot Dog Lunch on Monday, kicking off September with free meals for law enforcement personnel from all across Cleveland County. Read the feature story to learn more.

Clay-Barnette hosted a festival at their Shelby location which was fun for the whole family. The event drew in several hundred people over the mid-day and featured a 1936 Plymouth used on movie sets.

Polkville Fire Department dedicated Tanker 24 into service, after a long-awaited arrival. The ceremony was held last weekend. Read all about it right here.

An op-ed by Ron Humphries talked about the dangers of social media and too much mindless entertainment in correlation to the previous warnings of television decades ago.

Several accidents plagued CC again this week, with College Avenue being the driving factor of many recent wrecks. A storm Saturday afternoon caused a large tree to fall across College Ave., near Broad River, a power line fell near the intersection of Dekalb and S Lafayette St. Many residents in the City of Shelby and across Cleveland County were temporarily without power.

Cleveland County Schools reported outstanding academic growth for the 2025-26 school year with Casar elementary shining through as a bright example. Read more here.

A Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office investigation of a multi-county fraud took the alleged suspect off the streets and into custody.

All four Cleveland County High Schools football teams went home victorious Friday night, with Burns, Crest, Kings Mountain and Shelby dominating the fields with two being shut-downs. Burns didn’t let the Warriors come out to play Friday, with a 53-0 win over East Gaston. Crest played a hard-fought game in Asheville, coming back home with a 17-3 victory over the Cougars. Kings Mountain beat Bandys in a 43-7 smash and Shelby, once again, made Highland Tech rethink their athletic football program in a devastating 80-0 massacre.
