CCC participates in Rapid Response to aid NEG employees

BUSINESS / EDUCATION — Cleveland Community College, as part of the Cleveland County NCWorks team, has been supporting the workers affected by the layoffs at Electric Glass Fiber America/NEG as part of the state workforce system’s “Rapid Response” program.

The company filed what is generally called a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice with the state on July 6, stating that approximately 282 employees were set to lose their jobs. That notice triggered planning for the response. This included organizing three Rapid Response events, on July 24, Aug. 7 and Aug. 12, with representatives participating from NCWorks, Cleveland Community College and the N.C. Department of Commerce’s Divisions of Workforce Solutions and Employment Security. At these events, workers learned more about resources and services that could help them through their career transition.

NCWorks partners worked closely with officials from the company to organize the events, with the employer providing contacts for people who could speak to their workers about issues like insurance, 401(k) rollover and investment advice.

Also as part of the response, the NCWorks team, including Foothills Workforce Development Board and economic development partners, held a job fair on Aug. 6, with a total of 44 employers participating, in order to let the workers know about potential new job opportunities in the region. The state Division of Workforce Solutions deployed the NCWorks Mobile Career Center unit to support this job fair.

The Cleveland County NCWorks Career Center continues to stand ready to help workers with finding new jobs and training opportunities. Those affected by the layoffs may be eligible for a federal resource called the Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act (WIOA) Dislocated Worker program, which can pay for certain types of training and other career services.
