Staff Reports | Cleveland County Government

Cleveland County Government has been recognized as the number five 'Healthiest Employer in North Carolina' among organizations with 500 to 1,499 employees and ranked 93rd nationwide in the 2025 Healthiest Employers® awards.

This national program honors organizations that demonstrate exceptional commitment to employee well-being through innovative benefits, comprehensive health programs, and a culture that prioritizes wellness. Applicants across North Carolina, including public agencies, nonprofit organizations, and private companies, completed an extensive survey evaluating benefits, workplace amenities, paid leave, preventive care, and long-term health initiatives.

Cleveland County Government offers employees a robust suite of wellness resources, including low-cost primary care, an employee wellness center, chronic disease management programs, mental health support, and opportunities for physical activity such as walking breaks and fitness challenges.

“Our employees are engaging in our programs and improving their health in ways we never imagined,” said Human Resources Director Francesco Rodriguez. “Whether they’re taking walking breaks, joining the Cleveland Cup 5K, completing safety training, or getting support for chronic conditions, these resources are helping our workforce become healthier and stronger.”

These improvements stem from annual health screenings, HSA classes, chronic disease

management programs, Weight Watchers, and tailored support for diabetes, cardiovascular

health, and medical weight management.

A highlight of the county’s wellness efforts is the Medical Weight Management Program. The

program offers personalized guidance, FDA-approved medications, one-on-one and virtual

group sessions, and weekly check-ins. Employees also benefit from an on-site wellness center, low-cost pharmacy, and expanded primary care services.

Mental and emotional health remain a priority as well. Through the Employee Support

Program, a certified counselor with a doctorate in pastoral care and counseling provides

confidential on-site counseling, training, and support sessions, delivering more than 1,200

counseling sessions each year.

Cleveland County Government also has a strong track record in regional rankings, placing 8th in 2021, 2nd in 2022, and 1st in both 2023 and 2024 in the Greater Charlotte Area Healthiest Employers® awards.
