Jaquan Nijah McDowell, 18, of Shelby, was arrested on Oct. 25 for alleged attempted first-degree murder, according to the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office Detention Center.

According to the court filing reviewed by WCAB News, McDowell is accused of "unlawfully, willfully, and with malice aforethought attempting to kill Brian Spurling."

McDowell has waived his right to a personal appearance and consented to an audio-video proceeding, according to filings from October 27. He has also filed a waiver of counsel. Fingerprints were submitted to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation as part of the criminal process, according to the court records.

A bond hearing was held on October 27; however, the amended bond setting indicates that the bond is not authorized. The next scheduled hearing in the case is set for November 17, 2025.

Additional details, including any circumstances surrounding the alleged attack, have not been publicly released by the Shelby Police Department.
