OPINION – As we gather with family and friends this Independence Day, we celebrate more than fireworks, cookouts, and parades. We celebrate the birth of the greatest experiment in self-government the world has ever known. This year carries even greater significance as our nation begins commemorating America's 250th anniversary—a milestone that invites each of us to reflect on where we have been, who we are, and the legacy we will leave for future generations.
Two hundred and fifty years ago, ordinary men and women chose an extraordinary path. They declared that liberty was not a privilege granted by government but a God-given right belonging to every individual. They pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to establish a nation founded on freedom, personal responsibility, and the rule of law. Their courage changed the course of history.
America has never been perfect, but it has always been exceptional.
Our story is one of perseverance through adversity, innovation through challenge, and unity in moments of crisis. We have endured wars, economic hardship, natural disasters, and deep political disagreements. Yet time and again, the American people have demonstrated an unwavering ability to overcome obstacles and emerge stronger than before.
That resilience is what makes me proud to be an American.
I am proud of the men and women who wear the uniform of our Armed Forces, defending freedom around the world. I am proud of our law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, and first responders who answer the call every day to protect our communities. I am proud of our teachers, farmers, factory workers, healthcare professionals, small business owners, and countless volunteers who quietly strengthen the fabric of our nation through their service and hard work.
Here in North Carolina, and especially in communities like Cleveland County, we see the American spirit every day. Neighbors helping neighbors. Churches feeding the hungry. Local businesses investing in our communities. Parents working tirelessly to provide better opportunities for their children. These acts of kindness and responsibility are what truly define our country.
As we celebrate America's 250th birthday, we should remember that freedom is never guaranteed. Every generation has a responsibility to preserve the liberties secured by those who came before us. That means participating in our communities, respecting one another despite our differences, supporting those who serve, and remaining faithful to the constitutional principles that have guided our Republic for two and a half centuries.
The next chapter of America's story has not yet been written. It will be shaped by the choices we make today and the values we pass on to our children and grandchildren. If we remain committed to freedom, opportunity, and personal responsibility, I have every confidence that America's greatest days are still ahead.
This Independence Day, let us proudly raise our flags, remember those who sacrificed for our freedom, and celebrate the blessings of living in the United States of America.
After 250 years, there is still no place on earth like this nation.
I am grateful for the freedoms we enjoy, hopeful for the future we are building together, and, now more than ever, proud to be an American.
