Hyder was suspended Friday afternoon, May 29, after a video circulating on social media showed what allegedly appeared to be excessive force, as was stated by City of Shelby officials, against a suspect, Cherrie Moore, 34, when Shelby Police Officers responded to a potential alleged breaking and entering. Moore was arrested and charged with breaking or entering with a $10,000 bond, resisting a public officer, assault on a government official, but was later released that same day.

Protests began late Friday afternoon that moved around Uptown, from the Earl Scruggs Center, to the Shelby Police Department, City Hall and the Cleveland County Courthouse.

On Saturday morning, 10 a.m., May 30, another video statement was released by The City of Shelby to the public which provided an update that Hyder had been fired from The Shelby Police Department and the SBI was investigating Friday's incident.

On Monday morning he was charged with one count of assault inflicting serious injury.
