Shelby Police Department releases statement regarding charges

On Friday, August 15th, 2025, investigators with the Shelby Police Department were notified of a fraud-related incident that had been reported to investigators in Gwinnett County, Ga. This incident involved the misuse of a social security number belonging to a victim that lives in Georgia.


During this investigation, Shelby Police Department investigators determined that this social security number had been fraudulently used by an individual to gain employment with Cleveland County Schools.


As a result of this investigation, on September 22, 2025, investigators with the Shelby Police Department obtained warrants on Janet Yevette Martin, 58, of 229 Glendower Lane, Chesnee, S.C. The warrants were for the following charges:

·        Two counts of Identity Theft

·        Two counts of Forgery of an Instrument

·        Two counts of Uttering a Forged Instrument

·        One count of Obtaining Property by False Pretenses


Janet Martin was arrested in South Carolina, on unrelated fraud charges, on September 23, 2025. She later waived extradition and was served with the North Carolina warrants on October 6, 2025.
