Cops and Cones a sweet success in Boiling Springs

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Despite the rain on Thursday evening, there were no meltdowns at the first Cops and Cones event in Boiling Springs, hosted by The Boiling Springs Police Department and Scoop-A-Doodle-Doo.

Kids and cops alike poured out for the fun event, a first of its kind in the college town located in the southwest corner of Cleveland County.

The event was scooped up out of an idea of how to get out in public and engage with residents in a positive way, explained Boiling Springs Police Chief Brian DiYorio.

“What better way to engage with kids in the summer than doing it with Ice cream?” DiYorio noted.

Melissa Thompson of Scoop-A-Doodle-Doo was all-in on the idea. “We’ve been here three years and we are excited to be a part of Cops and Cones. We’ve had a great turnout despite the rain,” she said. “We’ve wanted to be more involved in community activities and get to know the kids and parents and grandparents. We wanted to provide a place for them to come all year long. Chief DiYorio has done a great job bringing the community together and we’re thankful for that and hope to do it again.”

The Town of Boiling Springs' mayor was there, chatting with residents. He took a moment to speak with The Independent, praising DiYorio’s dedicated work on bringing the community together.

“I think this is a great deal,” said Mayor Tommy Greene. “Since Chief DiYorio has joined us, we’ve had a lot of improvements at the (police) department. Lots of good things going on in the community that has made the community feel good about living here and the community involvement by our police department has raised morale and I think it’s super what he’s doing.”

Chief DiYorio praised those involved, stating, "It's an opportunity for us to do something a little different than what we have doing. And its great seeing kids get out here having such a great time and we love it.

"Scoop-A-Doodle-Doo has been great, we really appreciate them and all those at The Town of Boiling Springs and the dedicated law enforcement officers that have shown up from across the county. This is what Boiling Springs is about, and events like this remind us how awesome our community is; for all of us to be out here together is really rewarding in itself."

DiYorio said they plan to do more Cops and Cones events periodically though the year, along with other ideas.

“We are trying out a few different community events,” explained DiYorio. “We hope people like them and would love people to come out and to provide feedback on our community events.”
