CHARLOTTE — Don Brown, former U.S. Navy JAG officer, author, and Republican candidate for the United States Senate, today issued the following statement in honor of the 250th Birthday of the United States Navy, adding a special word of gratitude for navy veterans and current Sailors from Cleveland County.

"For two and a half centuries, America’s sailors have stood the watch — defending freedom, projecting strength, and preserving peace on every ocean of the globe. From wooden ships on the Atlantic to carrier strike groups in the Pacific, the Navy has carried our flag into history and kept our Republic secure.

"As a proud Navy veteran and former JAG officer, I’m deeply grateful for the honor of having served among the men and women who wear the uniform of the United States Navy."

Brown, who visited the Cleveland County Agricultural Fair a couple of weeks ago, spoke with the Shelby Independent via phone, on Oct 13, adding a special word for Cleveland County Navy veterans.

“I would especially like to recognize all our fellow North Carolina veterans in Cleveland County, Gaston, Rutherford, and all across the state. It’s a great day to celebrate all of the shipmates all over the world from the beginning of the Navy to present day." Brown said. "The United States Navy has been on the front line of freedom for 250 years and we all take comfort in knowing the brave men and women from North Carolina, such as those from Cleveland County, are among their ranks, protecting your family, and mine.

"Happy 250th Birthday to the United States Navy — may your course forever be true.”
