Shelby resident gets community involved in Fair art project

CLEVELAND COUNTY FAIR – Shelby resident Bailey Jackson is leaving her mark at this year’s 102nd Cleveland County Agricultural Fair.
“I saw the Facebook post looking for someone to do a mural at the fair, and I just love the fair,” she said. “I’ve been going since I was a kid. I'm volunteering this year anyway, so I jumped at the chance.”
As the community engagement specialist for the Cleveland County government and co director of the annual Livermush Festival, doing an artistic project that gets the community involved is right up her alley.
The theme for the fair, which is an ode to America’s 250th birthday, is “Red, White and Moo,” so she painted the fair logo and mascot along with a big 250, but the 250 is just an outline.

“I traced out the stars and stripes in the outline, and people coming to the fair get to pick up some paint and help fill it in,” Jackson said. “We’ve had older people and kids working on it. One of the county commissioners was just here painting.”
The Cleveland County Agricultural Fair continues through Oct. 11 at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds, located at 1751 E. Marion St. in Shelby.
