Post 82 to hold annual oratorical contest

Shelby American Legion Post 82 is inviting high school students to enter its annual oratorical contest. There will be a first prize of $500 dollars; a second prize of $300 dollars; and a third prize of $200 dollars. The Post winner will advance to higher levels of competition. The state winner will advance to the national finals in Indianapolis, Indiana.


The overall national contest winner gets a $25,000 scholarship. Second place takes home $22,500, and third gets $20,000. Each state winner who is certified into and participates in the national contest’s first round receives a $2,000 scholarship. Those who advance past the first round receive an additional $2,000 scholarship. The American Legion’s National Organization awards the scholarships, which can be used at any college or university in the United States.


Participants will give an 8 to 10 minute original speech on any aspect of the U.S. Constitution they choose. Then present a 3 to 5 minute oration on a pre-selected topic chosen from this list:

Amendment IV; Article 3 Section 3; Article IV section 4; and  Article VI clause 3.

The Post contest will be held  Saturday, January 10 with a rain date of January 17 at 1 p.m., in the fellowship hall of Ascension Lutheran Church, North Lafayette Street, Shelby, NC. It is open to all high school students, including home schooled students, who are U.S. Citizens.  


Students who want to enter should notify their school or the Contest Chairman, Ludy Wilkie, at  ludy@shelby.net and begin working on their presentations.
