Multi-Agency narcotics investigation leads to arrest, major methamphetamine seizure

SHELBY, NC – On April 2, 2026, the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) concluded a
multi-agency narcotics investigation resulting in the arrest of a Spindale man and the seizure of a six ounces of methamphetamine.
The operation was a collaborative effort between investigators with the Cleveland County
Sheriff’s Office, the CCSO Community Interdiction Team, and the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office. As part of the investigation, members of the Community Interdiction Team conducted a targeted vehicle stop on the suspect, identified as Joseph Harvey Smith.
The stop and subsequent investigation resulted in the seizure of more than six ounces of
methamphetamine worth $5,000.
Charges and Suspect Information:
Joseph Harvey Smith, of Spindale, North Carolina, was taken into custody and charged with:
One count of Trafficking Methamphetamine by Possession
One count of Trafficking Methamphetamine by Transportation
Bond Information:
Joseph Harvey Smith is being held at the Cleveland County Detention Center under no bond.
Sheriff Norman stated that he remains committed to working with partner agencies to combat the distribution of illegal narcotics to the citizens of Cleveland County.
