Local filmmaker's movie to premier in Shelby Saturday (today)

ENTERTAINMENT – This Saturday Aug. 8, 2026 (today) An indie film ‘Echoes from The Void’ will premier at Don Gibson Theater.

What makes this movie so special is that it was produced by a local filmmaker and shot mostly here in Cleveland County.

Brad Hord, writer, producer and composer of the film, is a Shelby native who still resides in the Shelby area. He said he got his start in independent film by composing original music for a few other independent filmmakers in the area and it grew from there.

“That’s how I met Director and Cinematographer, Robert W. Filion. Soon after scoring the music on a couple of projects for Robert, I wrote my first short film, which Robert shot and directed in 2013. This is the twelfth screenplay that I have written.

Horde explained after working on a number of short films with Robert Filion, they decided to produce a feature-length film.

“In true anthology form, it would consist of four short films that are connected by a wraparound story,” noted Hord.

In Echoes from The Void, a psychiatrist is charged with interviewing and analyzing a mysterious drifter, who is suspected of kidnapping a young girl. While being analyzed, the drifter shares with the psychiatrist multiple dark and mysterious tales.

“I almost don’t want to say horror,” Horde explained, when asked about the genre of the film, “But it has a little bit of everything. I would say it’s horror and a thriller, but I really hope people will turn out to see this. There's a lot of drama and character development. I’m proud of the characters in what I write and put an emphasis on the characters as much as the story itself.”

These tales are the various short films within the full-length feature.

The locations where the film crew shot in Cleveland County comprised of the Uptown Shelby area around the Earl Scruggs Center, at Double Shoals Mill, at the old home once known as Rose Hill on Grover Street, the Cleveland County Arts Council, the former Izzi Q’s restaurant and at the LeGrand Center.

“I am grateful to the people of Cleveland County for supporting the arts, and for me, especially independent film,” Hord noted.

For less than seven dollars (just $6.50 per movie ticket) you can see the premier of this film, meet the cast and filmmaker and enjoy a locally made entertaining film.

If you’re looking for a reason to support ‘local’ this is just another reason to do so. The cast and crew are mostly from the Piedmont and Western North Carolina areas.

Hord would like to see people turn out tonight for the premier at The Don Gibson Theater at 6 p.m. tonight, Saturday Aug 8, 2026.
