The City of Kings Mountain is asking residents in the city’s grid area to turn up their thermostats — and in turn, residents have raised the heat on city officials.

With sweltering days approaching soon, Kings Mountain asks for residents to help the grid by doing their part.

An Energy Conservation Notice was released on Saturday, asking for residents do follow certain guidelines on the dates of July 28 - 30.

“Due to the forecasted extreme heat, the City of Kings Mountain is asking all customers in our service area to help reduce strain on the power system by conserving electricity from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily, July 28 through July 30,” the statement read in part.

Suggestions made were as follows:

  • Raising thermostats to 73°F or higher

  • Avoiding the use of major appliances (such as ovens, washing-machines, and dryers)

  • Turning off non-essential lights and electronics

However, this didn’t sit well with some residents, who voiced their frustration on social media.

One user asked, “Am I the only one who's perplexed by the idea that every person and business in city limits is being asked not to use ovens for three consecutive days at dinner time?” Several agreed with the question.

While another light-heartedly wrote, “Dude, if my kids would turn off the lights, well, ever, the whole city could've avoided this.”

Another person commented, “Bet my power bill goes up $100 even if we do everything listed.”

Others expressed their frustration over having to deal with bad-smelling water and now being asked to to use ovens during supper time and having to sacrifice their comfort.

One commenter stated, “You want us to cooperate when y'all don't cooperate and fix our water.... Good luck with that.”

The statement from the City of Kings mountain concluded, saying, “Your cooperation is greatly appreciated as we work together to ensure reliable service for everyone during this time.”
